Within this use case a comprehensive catalogue of historical flooding events caused by hurricanes and severe rainfall will be developed. Each mapped flood event will be linked to specific triggers, such as hurricane track, intensity, or other relevant meteorological data. The catalogue will serve as a reference to support preparedness for future analogous events.
Using this reference, the applied services will facilitate the acquisition of new satellite imagery for ongoing or forecasted events, enabling automated change detection and the generation of flood delineation maps. In addition, for serious events above a previously agreed threshold, the service will generate an alert for the user to activate the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS) or International Disaster Charter using standard procedures.
Copernicus Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 imagery will be used as inputs. The products include maps showing flood extent and flood depth for historical events, as well as updated maps and impact assessments for newly delineated flood extents.
