CopernicusLAC Panama Centre

Geological Hazards Theme

The CopernicusLAC EO Service activities include the development of twelve innovative services for disaster risk reduction (DRR) based on Copernicus Sentinel satellite data. These services will be integrated into the future CopernicusLAC Panama Centre, which will provide users in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) access to the information, services, and processing capabilities established by the Centre in the region.

The geohazards theme will leverage the power of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) from Copernicus Sentinel-1 to detect a wide range of ground motion phenomena. During the development phase, the synergies between SAR interferometry, optical remote sensing, geological and morphological terrain analysis, asset exposure, and artificial intelligence will be leveraged to develop three specific services for DRR in the LAC region. These services will be related to landslides as well as the detection and monitoring of other geological hazards, such as seismic activity, subsidence, and active faults.

The project portfolio includes pre-operational applications, or use cases, of the developed services in selected areas throughout the LAC region for the purpose of demonstrating and testing their capabilities and potential.

Use Case 7: Landslide susceptibility mapping

Area of application: Peru

Estimation of the likelihood and vulnerability of an area to landslides.

The service applied in the pre-operational demonstration is Landslide susceptibility mapping and Interferometric Stacking. In addition, results from the SNAPPING PSI full resolution service will be used for demonstration purposes.

Use Case 8: Precise terrain motion mapping

Area of application: Panama

Ground motion rates through SAR Interferometry from Copernicus Sentinel-1 to measure subsidence in urban areas.

The services applied are Interferometric Stacking, SNAPPING-PSI Medium Resolution, and PSI Geometric Decomposition. In addition, results from the SNAPPING PSI full resolution service will be used for demonstration purposes.

Use Case 9: Wide area terrain motion mapping

Area of application: Ecuador

Measuring terrain deformation in non-urban contexts to detect and monitor active faults, seismicity, volcanic activity, and landslides with InSAR techniques.

The services applied are Interferometric Stacking, SNAPPING-PSI Medium Resolution, and PSI Geometric Decomposition.

Use Case 10: Mass production of terrain motion measurements

Area of application: Mexico and other areas (TBD)

Medium-resolution terrain deformation maps produced automatically over large areas.

The services applied are Interferometric Stacking, SNAPPING-PSI Medium Resolution, and PSI Geometric Decomposition.
